How do I upgrade, downgrade or switch to annual billing?

Updated September 14, 2026 · 3 min read

Open Settings → Personal settings → Billing and use the Change Plan card: pick the plan and the billing period, then confirm. Every change — up, down, monthly to annual and back — goes through a new checkout, so you always finish on a payment page. Your new limits apply as soon as the payment confirms, and the plan you were on is cancelled at that moment. A downgrade is refused until you are inside the smaller plan's limits.

Steps in the dashboard

  1. Open Billing. Settings → Personal settings → Billing.
  2. Scroll to Change Plan. The card is headed Change Plan if you have an active paid subscription, and Choose a Plan if you do not.
  3. Pick the billing period. Monthly or annual. Annual is $86 for Starter, $182 for Pro and $566 for Business — about 20% off the monthly price.
  4. Click the button on the plan you want. It reads Upgrade, Downgrade, Switch to Annual, Switch to Monthly or Subscribe. Your current plan and period shows Current Plan and is not clickable.
  5. Confirm. The dialog lists what changes and ends with "You'll be redirected to a secure payment page to complete the change."
  6. Pay. Card, UPI and the other methods on the payment page all work. When the payment confirms, the Billing page shows the new plan and the new limits are live.

What actually changes

  • A plan change is a new subscription. The old one is cancelled once the new one activates, so you end up with one subscription, not two.
  • Your QR codes are untouched. Nothing is regenerated and nothing needs reprinting — only the limits and features attached to your account change.
  • Abandoning the payment page changes nothing. You stay on your current plan and can try again later.
  • Partial billing periods are not refunded, so a mid-cycle downgrade takes effect as a new, cheaper subscription rather than a credit.
  • Grandfathered limits end at a plan change. If you kept the pre-August 2026 caps (Starter 25, Pro 250), changing plan moves you onto today's caps for good.

Why a downgrade is blocked

Before it opens the checkout, the app compares how many codes you have with what the smaller plan allows. If you have more, the change is refused and a message tells you how many codes are over the target plan's limit, then sends you to My QR Codes.

To get through: archive the extras (row menu → Archive — archived codes stop redirecting but keep their history and can be brought back later), then return to Billing and click Downgrade again. Plan limits and what counts against them explains which codes are included in the count.

Common problems

I paid but my plan has not changed

Give it a minute, then click Sync Subscription on the Billing page — it pulls the current state from the billing provider. The helper text under Manage Subscription says the same: sync if your plan didn't update after a change.

The Downgrade button sent me to My QR Codes

You have more codes than the smaller plan allows. Archive the extras and try again.

My renewal payment failed and I want to change plan

Fix the card first — see what happens when a payment fails. Starting a fresh checkout while a subscription is on hold can leave you with two subscriptions.

I only want to switch to annual on the same plan

Toggle the billing period to annual and the button on your current tier changes to Switch to Annual. It is still a new checkout.

Frequently asked questions

Do I lose my QR codes when I change plan?

No. Your codes, scan history and settings stay exactly as they are. Only your limits and features change.

Is an upgrade prorated?

No. Each change starts a new subscription and partial billing periods are not refunded.

How much does annual billing save?

About 20%: $86 a year on Starter, $182 on Pro and $566 on Business.

Can I change plan from the billing portal instead?

No. The portal handles payment methods, invoices and cancellation. Plan changes happen on the Billing page in the dashboard.

Why does it send me to a payment page for a downgrade?

All plan changes go through checkout so that any payment method — including UPI mandates, which are fixed-amount — can be set up correctly for the new price.
