Can I convert a static QR code to a dynamic one?

No — a code is dynamic or static from the moment you create it, and the choice cannot be changed afterwards. In edit mode both tabs are disabled and the tooltip reads Mode cannot be changed after creation. The reason is physical, not a policy: a static code carries its content inside the black and white pattern, so making it editable would mean a different pattern, which is a different printed code. The practical move is to create a dynamic code now and use it from your next print run.
Why the mode cannot change
The two kinds of code store completely different things:
- Static — the URL, WiFi password or phone number is encoded in the pattern itself. A scanner reads it off the paper and never contacts us, so there is nothing on our side to re-point.
- Dynamic — the pattern encodes a short QRCodeStack link. The scan reaches us, we look up your current destination and send the visitor on. That is what makes it editable and trackable.
Turning the first into the second changes what is encoded, which changes the pattern. Any product that offers a "convert" button is really giving you a new code to print. The background reading is in switching from static to dynamic QR codes.
What to do instead
- Create a dynamic replacement. Click Create New → Create QR Code, pick the same type, and leave the toggle on Dynamic.
- Copy the content across. Open the static code in a second tab if you need to read its fields.
- Name it clearly so you can tell the two apart in the list — for example "Menu card v2 (dynamic)".
- Download and use it on the next print run. New table tents, packaging, flyers and signage all get the dynamic code.
- Leave the static code alone while old printed copies are still in circulation. It costs nothing to keep and it keeps working.

That last row is the real trade. A dynamic code is a live service; a static one is just ink. Most people keep a handful of static codes for things that will never change, such as a WiFi password on a fridge magnet.
Common problems
I have already printed thousands of static codes
Nothing breaks. Static codes have no expiry and no account requirement — they keep resolving to whatever they encode for as long as that destination exists. If the destination is a URL you control, point that URL at the new content instead of reprinting, and use dynamic codes from the next run.
The Dynamic tab is greyed out for my type
Some types exist in one mode only. Barcode and 2D Barcode are static-only; PDF, Images, Video, vCard Plus, Menu and the other hosted-page types are dynamic-only. The tooltip names the restriction: {Type} is only available as Static or only available as Dynamic.
It says static QR codes need a paid plan
They do. The 7-day free trial includes 5 dynamic codes and no static ones, so static creation is blocked until you subscribe.
Frequently asked questions
Is there any way to keep the same printed pattern?
No. The pattern is the content on a static code, so a different behaviour always means a different pattern.
Will my static code stop working once I make the dynamic one?
No. The two are unrelated. The static code carries on exactly as before.
Can I go the other way — dynamic to static?
No, that direction is blocked too. Mode is fixed at creation in both directions.
Do I get analytics for the static code once I replace it?
No. Static scans never touch our servers, so there is no history to recover — tracking starts with the dynamic code.
