Why won't my vCard QR code save the contact on iPhone?
Updated September 14, 2026 · 3 min read
Scan the code, then tap Save Contact on the page that opens. iOS shows the contact card with Create New Contact and Add to Existing Contact — pick one and tap Done. If tapping the button does nothing, you are almost certainly inside an app's built-in browser: open the page in Safari and tap the button again.
How saving the contact is meant to work
- Scan the code with the iPhone Camera app and tap the banner that appears.
- The contact page opens in your browser with the name, role, phone, email and any social links.
- Tap Save Contact at the bottom of the card. If the code's owner renamed the button, it may say something else — it is the main action button on the page.
- iOS opens the contact card. Scroll down and choose Create New Contact or Add to Existing Contact.
- Tap Done. The contact is now in your Contacts app.
Do not use the browser's share button to save the contact. The iOS share sheet has no Contacts destination — it offers Files, Messages and AirDrop only. The Save Contact button is the route that works, which is why we serve the contact file directly instead of handing it to the share sheet.
Nothing happens when I tap Save Contact
In order of how often it is the cause:
- You are in an in-app browser. Links opened from Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok or a messaging app run inside that app's own browser, which handles downloaded files inconsistently. Tap the app's menu (usually … or a compass icon) and choose Open in Safari, then tap Save Contact again. This fixes the large majority of reports.
- The page was reached from a saved screenshot or a cached tab. Scan the code again so the page loads fresh.
- A file downloaded instead of opening. Tap the downloads arrow in the Safari toolbar, tap the
.vcffile, then choose Create New Contact from the card that opens. - A content or device-management restriction. On a managed work phone, check Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions — restrictions there can block the file from opening.
- A very old iPhone. Handsets several major versions behind handle served contact files less predictably. Saving the details manually is the reliable fallback.
I get an error instead of the contact
If tapping the button shows a short message rather than a contact card, the code itself is blocked. What you see and what it means:
| Message | What is happening |
|---|---|
Password required | The code is password protected and the page session has expired. Scan again and enter the password. |
Unavailable | The owner's plan is not active, so the code is offline. |
Expired or Not yet active | The owner set a date schedule on the code. |
Gone or Not found | The code was archived or deleted. |
These are owner-side states, not iPhone problems. The full list of scan-time pages is in what each scan-time error page means.
If you own the code
A few things are worth checking on your side before you conclude it is the scanner's phone:
- Test it yourself on an iPhone, in Safari, not from a message preview. Scan, tap the button, and confirm the contact card opens.
- Check the fields you filled in. Only the fields you completed are written into the contact — an empty Company or Website simply does not appear on the saved contact.
- Check the button label. The contact button text is editable on the vCard Plus form. If you renamed it to something unclear, people will not find it.
- Keep the code active. An archived code, a lapsed plan or an expiry date all take the contact file offline along with the page.
- Changed jobs? Because the code is dynamic, open it, click Edit, change the fields and click Update ✓. Everything already printed serves the new details.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the share sheet not offer Contacts?
iOS does not include Contacts as a share destination — it offers Files, Messages and AirDrop. Use the Save Contact button on the page, which opens the contact card directly.
Do I need an app to save the contact?
No. The Camera app scans the code and Safari opens the contact card. No scanner app and no QRCodeStack account are needed to save a contact.
It works in Safari but not from Instagram — why?
Links tapped inside Instagram open in Instagram's own browser, which handles contact files inconsistently. Open the page in Safari from that browser's menu and the button works.
Some fields are missing from the saved contact.
Only the fields the owner filled in are written to the contact file. Anything left blank on the vCard Plus form simply is not there to save.
Can the owner change the details after the cards are printed?
Yes. vCard Plus codes are dynamic, so editing the fields and clicking Update changes what every printed code serves from that moment.
