Why won't my QR code scan on Android?

Android handsets differ: some camera apps scan QR codes automatically, some need a setting switched on, and some do not scan at all. If your camera does nothing, use Google Lens — it is built into the Google app, Google Photos and Chrome, and reads codes on every current Android phone. If other codes scan and yours does not, the problem is the image: size, contrast, margin or glare.
Check the phone first
- Look for a QR setting in your camera app. The location varies by manufacturer. On Samsung phones it is under the camera's settings gear as Scan QR codes. Other brands put it in the camera's mode list or scan automatically with nothing to switch on.
- Use Google Lens. Open the Google app and tap the Lens icon in the search bar, or open the photo of the code in Google Photos and tap Lens. Lens decodes the code and shows the link to tap.
- Check the quick settings tile. Many Android versions ship a QR code scanner tile in the pull-down quick settings panel.
- Hold still and let it focus. Fill about a third of the frame with the code, roughly 15–30 cm away, and tap the screen on the code to force a focus.
- Clean the lens, remove a thick case. A smudge or a case lip over the camera is invisible and very common.
- Update the camera and Google apps. Scanning improved a lot over successive releases; an old, unpatched handset is the one device class that may genuinely need a dedicated scanner app.
If the camera decodes the code but no browser opens, check that a default browser is set in the phone's app settings.
Check the code itself
If other codes scan on the same phone, the image is the problem:
- Too small. At least 2 cm square for a phone held close; scanning distance ÷ 10 beyond that.
- Low contrast or inverted. Dark pattern on a light background. Light-on-dark loses you a large share of scanners.
- No margin. Clear space on all four sides, about 10% of the code's width.
- A logo that covers too much, or a Dense or Ultra pattern density that packs more dots into the same square than the print can resolve.
- Glare and curvature. Gloss finishes, bottles and folded flyers all distort or hide part of the grid.

It scans but an error page opens
If the phone reads the code and lands on an error page, the pattern is fine and the code's settings or the owner's account are not. The page title identifies the cause:
- QR Code Unavailable — archived, paused, or a scan limit reached.
- QR Code Expired or QR Code Not Yet Active — a date schedule is set on the code.
- This page is taking a short break — the owner's subscription lapsed.
- Link Disabled for Safety — the destination was flagged by our safety screening.

Common problems
It scans on one Android phone but not another
That is normal. Camera apps differ by manufacturer and by Android version, and a code operating close to its limits will pass on the better decoder and fail on the weaker one. Fix the code rather than the phone: bigger, higher contrast, wider margin.

Nothing happens at all, on any code
Use Google Lens to confirm the phone can decode anything. If Lens works and the camera does not, it is the camera app, not the code.
