Why does my QR code show Unavailable, Expired or Not Yet Active?
Updated September 14, 2026 · 3 min read
The code scanned correctly — something is stopping the redirect, and the page title says what. QR Code Unavailable means archived, paused or past a scan limit. QR Code Expired and QR Code Not Yet Active mean a date schedule. This page is taking a short break means the owner's plan lapsed. QR Code Not Found means it was deleted. Each one is fixed in the dashboard, and the printed code keeps working once it is.
Every scan-time page and what causes it
| Page title | What it means | How to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| QR Code Not Found | The code was deleted, or the link is not a code we have. "The QR code you scanned is invalid or has been deleted." | Deletion is permanent — there is no restore. Create a replacement code and reprint. |
| QR Code Unavailable | The code is archived or paused. "This QR code is no longer active." | Unarchive it from the row menu or its detail page. |
| QR Code Unavailable | A scan limit was reached. "This QR code has reached its maximum number of scans." | Open the code, go to Rules & Limits → Scan Limit, raise it or switch it off, then Update ✓. |
| QR Code Not Yet Active | An activation date is set in the future. "This QR code will be available soon." | Rules & Limits → Date Schedule → change Activates On. |
| QR Code Expired | The expiry date has passed. | Rules & Limits → Date Schedule → change or clear Expires On. |
| This page is taking a short break | The owner's subscription has lapsed, so their codes are offline. | Subscribe again from Billing. Codes, links and analytics come back exactly as they were. |
| Protected QR Code | A password is set. "This QR code is password protected." | Share the password, or clear it in Rules & Limits → Password Protection with Remove password. |
| Link Disabled for Safety | The destination was flagged by our URL safety screening. | See why a code says Link Disabled for Safety. |
"Unavailable": archived, paused, or over your plan limit
This is the most common of the set and it has three sources.
- You archived it. Archiving stops a code redirecting straight away; the dialog says as much when you do it. It is fully reversible — use Unarchive from the row menu or the code's detail page. Unarchiving only succeeds if it keeps you inside your plan's limit on dynamic codes.
- A scan limit was reached. Scan limits live under Rules & Limits and are a Pro and Business feature. The counter does not reset on its own; raise the limit or turn it off.
- Your plan has fewer codes than you have. After a downgrade, excess codes are auto-deactivated once the grace period ends — zero-scan codes first, then the oldest. See being over your plan limit.
Archive is the reversible one. Delete is permanent, there is no trash, and a deleted code's printed pattern can never be revived — it will show QR Code Not Found forever.
"This page is taking a short break"
This one is not about the code's settings. When a subscription ends, live codes stop redirecting and scanners see a neutral holding page — no branding of yours, no blame, and a small "Are you the owner of this QR code?" section that takes you to sign in and reactivate.
Nothing is lost while it lasts: your codes, short links, destinations and full scan history stay exactly as they were and start working again the moment the plan is active. Analytics stay readable even while the codes are offline.
If a payment failed rather than the plan being cancelled, there is a grace window during which everything keeps working — see what happens when a payment fails and what happens when your subscription ends.
Before you reprint anything
None of these pages mean the printed code is faulty. The pattern encodes a link that never changes, so every fix above is made in the dashboard and takes effect on the next scan — on posters, cards and packaging already in the world.
Reprinting is only necessary in two cases:
- The code was deleted. That cannot be undone.
- The code is static, so its content is inside the pattern. Static codes have no settings to change and no scan-time pages of their own — a scan never reaches us at all.
Frequently asked questions
Does "QR Code Unavailable" mean the code expired?
Not necessarily. It covers archived and paused codes and codes that hit a scan limit. A genuine expiry date shows QR Code Expired instead.
Can I get back a deleted QR code?
No. Deletion is permanent and there is no trash or restore. Archive is the reversible option.
Do QR codes expire on their own?
No. A code only expires if someone set an expiry date on it under Rules & Limits, or if the account's plan lapses.
Will scanners see my company name on the error page?
No. The pages are neutral and say only that the code is not active, with a note asking the visitor to contact whoever shared it.
My code shows the error but I changed the setting — why?
Scans are never cached, so a fix applies to the next scan. If a visitor still sees the old page, they are looking at a page their browser kept open — ask them to scan again.

Will my QRCodeStack QR code expire or stop working?
Static codes never expire. Dynamic codes work while your plan is active and stop only if it lapses, or if you archive the code, schedule it or cap its scans.
What is the difference between archiving and deleting a QR code?
Archiving is reversible: the code stops redirecting but keeps its scans and can be unarchived within your plan limits. Deleting is permanent, with no trash.
How do I schedule, pause, or cap the number of scans on a QR code?
Scan Limit and Date Schedule sit in Rules & Limits on the Content step and need Pro or Business. To pause a code on any plan, archive it.
What happens to my QR codes if my subscription ends?
Dynamic codes stop redirecting and scanners see a 'taking a short break' page. Nothing is deleted — subscribing again reactivates the same printed codes.
Why does my QR code say "Link Disabled for Safety"?
Its destination was flagged as phishing or malware by our URL safety screening, so the code stops redirecting. Email support with the link to have it reviewed.
