Why won't my QR code scan on an iPhone?

On an iPhone the usual cause is the phone, not the code: Settings → Camera → Scan QR Codes has to be switched on, and the camera shows a small banner you have to tap — it does not open the link by itself. If the toggle is on and the banner never appears, the problem is the image: too small, too little contrast, no clear margin, or glare on the surface.
Check the iPhone first
- Turn on QR scanning. Open Settings → Camera and make sure Scan QR Codes is on. It is on by default, but it gets switched off by accident and by device-management profiles on work phones.
- Use the rear camera in Photo mode. Video, Portrait and the front camera do not reliably detect codes.
- Wait for the banner and tap it. The camera shows a notification across the top of the screen. Nothing opens until you tap it, and a Focus mode that hides notifications can suppress it.
- Try the Code Scanner instead. Add Code Scanner to Control Center in Settings → Control Center, then open it from Control Center. It opens links directly, without the banner step.
- Hold still and let it focus. Fill about a third of the frame with the code, roughly 15–30 cm away, and tap the screen on the code to force a focus.
- Clean the lens and remove a thick case. A smudged lens or a case lip over the camera is a common and invisible cause.
If a link opens but the page is blocked, check Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions. Web-content restrictions can stop a perfectly good destination from loading.
Check the code itself
If the toggle is on and other codes scan fine, the image is the problem. In order of how often it is the answer:
- Too small. Print at least 2 cm square for a phone held close, and scanning distance ÷ 10 beyond that.
- Low contrast or inverted. A dark pattern on a light background is what scanners expect. Light dots on a dark background are read by far fewer phones.
- No margin. The code needs clear space on all four sides, about 10% of its width. Artwork or a trim edge running into the pattern stops detection.
- Logo too large, or density too high. A big central logo and the Dense or Ultra pattern density both leave the decoder less to work with.
- Glare. Gloss laminate, a varnish or a screen reflecting a ceiling light hides part of the pattern. Tilt the phone rather than moving it closer.
- Curved or creased. A code on a bottle, a folded flyer or fabric distorts the grid.

It scans but nothing useful opens
If the phone reads the code and then shows an error page, the code is working and something at the destination is not. The page title tells you which:
- QR Code Unavailable, QR Code Expired, QR Code Not Yet Active or This page is taking a short break — see what each scan-time error page means.

- A blank or broken page — open the destination in Safari on a phone. Many sites that work on a desktop fail on mobile, and a destination that is not served over HTTPS will warn or refuse to load.
Common problems
It works on Android but not on iPhone
Almost always the Scan QR Codes toggle, a Focus mode hiding the banner, or an inverted colour scheme. Android camera apps and Google Lens tolerate low contrast a little better than the iPhone camera does.
It scans from a screen but not from print
Screens are backlit and flat, which flatters a code. Scan the physical piece in ordinary light before you approve a print run — see testing a QR code before print.
The contact card will not save

Where is the QR setting on an iPhone?
Settings → Camera → Scan QR Codes. It is on by default; work phones with a management profile sometimes have it forced off.
Do I need an app to scan QR codes on an iPhone?
No. The built-in Camera app reads them, and Control Center has a Code Scanner you can add in Settings → Control Center.
Why does the camera see the code but nothing happens?
Either the banner appeared and was not tapped, or the decode never completed. Try the Control Center Code Scanner, which opens links directly.
Does the iPhone need an internet connection?
To open the page, yes. Every QRCodeStack code is dynamic and resolves through a redirect, so a phone with no data can read the code but cannot load the destination.
Can I fix this without reprinting?
If the destination is wrong, yes — edit a dynamic code and every printed copy follows. If the printed pattern is too small or too low-contrast, only a reprint fixes it.
