How do I use the QRCodeStack browser extension?
Updated September 14, 2026 · 3 min read
Click the QRCodeStack icon in your browser toolbar and the popup turns the page you are on into a QR code. Without an account you get a free black-and-white static code with a live preview and Download PNG — nothing leaves your browser and nothing is stored on our side. Connecting your account switches on trackable codes, short links, colours, themes, frames and logos, and your five most recent links with their click counts.
Install it
Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store. The same build runs in Edge, and there is a separate Firefox add-on. After installing, pin the QRCodeStack icon to your toolbar so it is one click away, and right-click any page to use Create QR code for this page from the context menu.
If you cannot find the listing for your browser, email support@qrcodestack.com or check the support page and we will send you the link.
What you get without an account
- A static QR code for the current tab's address, or for any text you type in the box.
- A live preview and Download PNG.
- It is generated inside the extension, so it works offline and the address never reaches our servers.
Static codes never expire, but the content is baked into the pattern: you cannot change where one points, and it records no scans. The Trackable toggle, the customisation controls and the Short Link tab are visible but locked until you connect an account.
Connect your account
There are two ways. The quick one:
- Open the popup and click Sign in to connect.
- Sign in on the page that opens, then click Connect on the authorize screen.
- Close the tab and reopen the popup.
If your browser cannot hand the code over automatically, use a connect code instead:
- In the dashboard, go to Settings → Profile → Connected apps.
- Click Generate connect code, then Copy.
- In the extension popup, paste it into Connect code and click Connect with code.
A connect code is valid for 90 days, and the same code also connects the Google Sheets and Slides add-on. Generating a new one invalidates the old one.
What changes once you connect
- Trackable codes. The QR Code tab gains a Trackable mode, which becomes the default. One click creates a real dynamic code for the page, with Download PNG and links into the dashboard to customise the design or view analytics.
- Design. Themes, module styles, frames and custom colours unlock in the Customize panel.
- Short links. The Short Link tab turns the current tab into a qstak.co link, with an optional custom back-half and your own domain if you have one. See creating a short link.
- Recent links. Your five most recent links with click counts, plus a plan-usage line showing how much of your allowance is used.
What it collects, and how to disconnect
The extension reads the address and title of the tab you are on, and only at the moment you create a code or a link from it. It cannot read your browsing history or the contents of any page.
To disconnect, click Disconnect at the bottom of the popup. That deletes the stored connect code from your browser straight away and the extension returns to free static mode. To invalidate the code itself — for example on a shared machine — generate a new connect code in Settings → Profile → Connected apps; the old one stops working.
Common problems
The popup asks me to connect again
The connect code expired after 90 days, or it was rejected and cleared automatically. Generate a new one and paste it in.
Trackable mode and the Short Link tab are locked
Those two need a connected account. If you are already connected, the popup would show a plan-usage line and a Disconnect link in the footer; if it does not, the connection is gone.
A trackable code I made stopped redirecting
Either the destination was later flagged as unsafe, or the account that owns the code lapsed. Email support@qrcodestack.com and we will tell you which it is.
Every request fails in Firefox
Firefox treats site access as opt-in. The popup shows a Grant access button — click it, or enable the permission on the add-on's Permissions tab.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account to use it?
No. The static QR code works signed out, offline, with nothing sent to us. An account is only needed for trackable codes, short links and design options.
Does the free static code expire?
No. Static codes never expire — we do not deactivate them, including free ones. But they cannot be edited and they record no scans.
How long does a connect code last?
90 days. Generate a new one in Settings → Profile → Connected apps when it runs out; the old code stops working at that moment.
Does it work in Edge and Firefox?
Yes. Edge uses the same build as Chrome, and there is a separate Firefox add-on. In Firefox you may have to click Grant access the first time.
Can someone else use my connect code?
Anyone holding it can create codes and links on your account, so treat it like a password. Generating a new code immediately invalidates the old one.
