GS1 DIGITAL LINK

GS1 QR code generator — conformant Digital Link URIs from a GTIN

Build a GS1 Digital Link QR code that resolves correctly for both a checkout scanner and a shopper's phone. GTIN, batch, serial and expiry encoded to GS1 URI Syntax, ready for Sunrise 2027.

A GS1 QR code is a URI, not just a barcode with a GTIN in it

This is where most “GS1 QR” attempts go wrong. A conformant code does not encode a bare GTIN, and it does not encode an arbitrary marketing URL either. It encodes a GS1 Digital Link URI: a structured web address whose path carries the identifiers in a defined order, so both a point-of-sale scanner and a consumer's phone camera can read meaning out of the same symbol.

In practice that means a path shaped like /01/09506000134352 for the GTIN, with optional qualifiers appended in the sequence the standard requires — batch or lot, serial number, expiry date. Get the order or the application identifiers wrong and the code is a URL that happens to contain numbers, not a GS1 code.

This generator builds the URI for you from the fields, so the structure is correct by construction. If you want the standard itself explained rather than the tool, GS1 Digital Link is the longer read.

What you can encode

Qualifiers are appended in the order GS1 URI Syntax requires.

FieldApplication identifierTypical use
GTIN01The product itself — always required
Batch or lot10Recalls and traceability
Serial number21Item-level identity, authentication, warranty
Expiry date17Perishables and pharmaceuticals

Data Matrix is also supported where the print area is too small for a QR — see GS1 Data Matrix.

Why this is suddenly urgent

Sunrise 2027

GS1's global migration expects retail point-of-sale to accept 2D barcodes by the end of 2027, which is what is pushing this onto packaging roadmaps now.

One symbol, two jobs

The same code scans at the till and opens a product page for the shopper, so the pack does not need both a barcode and a marketing QR.

Digital Product Passport

The EU regime leans on the same identifier plumbing, so the work is not wasted even where retail scanning is not the driver.

Verify before you print

The expensive mistake in this area is discovering non-conformance after a print run. A GS1 code that is structurally wrong still scans — a phone will happily open the URL — so nothing looks broken until a retailer's scanner rejects it or an audit fails.

Check the URI structure and the resolver behaviour before the artwork goes out. How to verify a GS1-conformant resolver walks through what to test, and the Sunrise 2027 guide covers the timeline.

For a pack redesign that needs hundreds or thousands of GTINs encoded at once, bulk generation takes them from a CSV rather than one at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a QR code GS1-conformant?

It must encode a GS1 Digital Link URI: the identifiers appear in the URL path with their application identifiers in the order GS1 URI Syntax defines, and the URL must be served by a resolver that behaves as the standard expects. A QR code containing a plain GTIN or an ordinary marketing URL is not conformant.

Do I need a GS1 membership to use this?

You need a GTIN, which comes from GS1. The generator encodes the identifiers you already have; it does not issue them.

Can one code work at the checkout and for the shopper?

That is the point of Digital Link. The point-of-sale system reads the GTIN out of the URI path while a phone follows the URL to a product page, so a single symbol serves both.

Is the destination still editable after printing?

Yes. The Digital Link URI stays fixed — that is what makes it conformant — while the page a shopper lands on can be changed at any time. This matters on packaging with a multi-year shelf life.

What about the EU Digital Product Passport?

It relies on the same identifier and resolver plumbing, so a conformant GS1 code is a sensible foundation for it — see EU Digital Product Passport.
