What a Digital Product Passport actually is
A Digital Product Passport is not a document. It is a machine-readable identifier on a product — in practice a QR code or a DataMatrix — that resolves to a structured record about that product: what it is made of, where it came from, how it can be repaired, and how it should be disposed of.
The regulation defines what the record must contain. It does not hand you a code. Producing an identifier that resolves correctly, stays resolvable for the life of the product, and follows the GS1 Digital Link structure is a separate piece of work, and it is the part we cover.
Which products are affected, and when
The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation phases DPP in by product category rather than all at once. Batteries come first, in February 2027. Delegated acts for textiles and apparel, tyres and aluminium are expected during 2027, with electronics enforcement anticipated in the 2027–2028 window and furniture in 2028.
Once a delegated act is adopted for a category, businesses have roughly eighteen months before enforcement. That is the planning window, and it is why the codes are being specified now rather than in the year of the deadline.
These dates come from the published ESPR working plan and shift as delegated acts are adopted. Treat the sequence as reliable and the exact months as provisional — check the current position for your own category before committing to a timeline.
Why the code has to be a GS1 Digital Link
A DPP identifier is expected to be resolvable by anyone who scans it, not only by the systems of the company that printed it. That is what the GS1 Digital Link standard is for: it puts a GTIN inside a web address with a defined structure, so a scanner, a customs system or a recycler can all reach the same record.
A QR code containing an ordinary short link does not do this. It resolves for a phone browser and tells a machine nothing about what it is pointing at.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Digital Product Passport just a QR code?
The code is the entry point, not the passport. The passport is the structured record it resolves to. But the code has to be built correctly — a GTIN inside a GS1 Digital Link URL, served by a resolver that identifies itself — or the record is unreachable to anything except a phone browser.
Does my product need one yet?
Depends on the category. Batteries are first, in February 2027. Textiles, tyres and aluminium have delegated acts expected during 2027, electronics enforcement around 2027–2028, furniture 2028. Check the current ESPR working plan for your own category, because the dates move as acts are adopted.
Can I use a normal QR code generator for this?
For a pilot, yes — it will scan. For the real thing, no. The requirement is a resolvable, structured identifier, and an ordinary short link carries no GTIN and no link types, so nothing downstream can interpret it.
What happens when the destination changes?
That is the argument for a dynamic code. A product can be in circulation for a decade; the page describing it will not survive unchanged that long. A dynamic code lets the destination be repointed without touching the printed artwork.
