What Is a File QR Code?

A file QR code is a dynamic QR that points to a file you have uploaded to QRCodeStack. The QR itself encodes a redirect URL on our servers — when someone scans the code, our redirect serves the file you currently have attached to it. The file is hosted on Cloudflare R2 with global edge delivery, which means downloads are fast everywhere and the original is never lost. Your printed QR points at a stable address, and the file behind that address is fully under your control.

The most useful property of a file QR code is that it survives the file replacing it. Print a QR on a product manual today, swap the underlying PDF for a corrected version next month, and every customer who scans receives the latest revision automatically. No reprint, no recall, no QR sticker over a QR sticker. Manufacturers, schools, hospitals, marketing teams, and software companies all rely on this to keep printed materials evergreen long after the original print run.

Supported formats include the entire Microsoft Office family (Word .docx, Excel .xlsx, PowerPoint .pptx and the older 97-2003 formats), Adobe PDF, OpenDocument variants, ZIP archives for bundled assets, MP4 and MOV for video, MP3 and WAV for audio, JPG and PNG for images, and CSV for raw data. Recipients open them on whatever device they scan with — desktop, tablet, or phone — and the browser either renders the file inline (PDF, image, MP4) or downloads it (Word, Excel, ZIP).

A file QR code is the cleanest way to bridge physical print and digital content. Anywhere a person used to grab a paper handout, you can put a QR sticker that delivers a fresh, current, customizable file on demand. Restaurants share allergen sheets, real estate agents share floor plans, manufacturers share certificates, and event organizers share schedules — all from a single small square of black and white pixels.

How to Create a File QR Code

Upload the file, brand the QR, hit download. Three steps, under two minutes, no design skills required.

Step 1

Pick File Type

Open the QRCodeStack generator and choose File. The upload control replaces the URL field so you can attach a document, deck, archive, or media file directly.

Step 2

Upload Your File

Drag and drop or browse for the file. Cloudflare R2 stores it globally, the original filename is preserved, and a permanent redirect URL is generated immediately.

Step 3

Customize & Download

Pick brand colors, add a logo, choose a corner style. Click Save & Download to grab a high-resolution PNG ready for packaging, posters, or training materials.

File QR Code Features

Everything you need to attach files to a QR code and keep them delivering reliably for years.

Any Format Welcome

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, ZIP, MP4, MP3, WAV, JPG, PNG, CSV — the full set of business-critical formats is supported out of the box. The original filename is preserved end to end.

Replace Anytime

Swap the attached file as often as you need. The printed QR keeps pointing at the same redirect, so every scan delivers whatever version you have currently saved in the dashboard.

Global Edge Delivery

Files live on Cloudflare R2 and are served from the edge closest to whoever scans. Customers in Sydney, Bangalore, and Boston all download at full speed without you doing anything.

Scan Analytics

Track downloads in real time. See how many people scanned, where they were, what device they used, and at what time — useful for measuring print campaign performance.

Brand It

Match the QR to the document it represents. Custom colors, embedded logo, and a choice of dot or square module styles let your file QR codes look like part of the design.

Print-Ready Output

High-resolution PNGs scale up to billboards or down to product labels without going soft. Whatever surface the QR ends up on, it scans cleanly with a single phone tap.

What People Put Inside File QR Codes

Six examples of file types we see most often — pick the closest match to your project as a starting point.

Word Documents

Contracts, policy documents, training handouts, briefs, internal memos. Anyone with Word or Google Docs opens the file directly on their phone or desktop without an email exchange.

Excel Spreadsheets

Price lists, inventory templates, schedule sheets, budget trackers. Customers and team members get the live spreadsheet, ready to download into Excel or Google Sheets.

PowerPoint Decks

Sales presentations, conference talks, lecture slides, investor pitches. Hand out a postcard with a QR and let the audience grab the deck after — no email capture needed.

ZIP Archives

Press kits, design assets, photo bundles, raw data dumps. Pack everything into one ZIP and let recipients pull the entire bundle with a single scan and tap.

MP4 Videos

Product demos, tutorial clips, testimonial reels. The MP4 plays inline in mobile browsers, so scanners watch the video instantly. See video QR codes →

MP3 Audio

Voice messages, podcast samples, audiobook excerpts, museum tour audio. Plays right in the phone browser. See MP3 QR codes →

File QR Code FAQ

The questions we get most often about file QR codes.

What file types does this support?

QRCodeStack accepts the full set of business and creative formats: Microsoft Office (.doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx), Adobe PDF, OpenDocument files, ZIP archives, MP4 and MOV videos, MP3 and WAV audio, JPG and PNG images, and CSV data. If you can upload it through your browser and the recipient device can open it, you can wrap it in a QR. For specialized formats like CAD or 3D files, contact us and we'll add the MIME type to the allow list.

What's the maximum file size?

File size limits depend on plan: free trial accounts get 5 MB, Starter plan gets 5 MB, Pro gets 10 MB, and Advanced gets 20 MB per upload. These limits cover the vast majority of documents, decks, and short videos. For larger assets, host the file externally (Dropbox, Google Drive, your own server) and use a URL QR code that redirects to it. ZIP archives are also a good way to consolidate multiple files into a single upload that fits comfortably under the limit.

Can I update the file later?

Yes — and this is the single biggest reason to use a file QR over an emailed attachment. Replace the underlying file in your dashboard whenever you need: a corrected typo, a new pricing sheet, an updated user manual. The printed QR stays exactly the same and every existing scan delivers the latest version. There is no reprint, no recall, and no second QR code to issue. This is what makes file QRs perfect for evergreen print materials and packaging.

How do scanners open the file?

When someone scans the QR, their phone opens our redirect URL in the default browser. The browser then handles the file according to its type: PDFs, MP4s, MP3s, and images render inline so the user can read, watch, or listen immediately; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ZIP, and CSV files trigger a download with the original filename intact. Recipients never see our internal storage URL — only the friendly filename you uploaded. With dynamic file QRs from QRCodeStack Pro (from $5/month), you also get analytics on every download. One-time codes are $1.

Wrap Any File in a QR

Upload your document, deck, archive, or media file once. Print the QR anywhere. Replace the file as often as you need without ever reprinting.
